In the new year you want to develop healthier eating habits. You’ve tried diets in the past, but you always end up gaining the weight back or not sticking to them. Diets are not a sustainable way to lost weight because they do not give you proper nutrients that your body needs. It’s important that you eat enough food to fuel your body, so you don’t end up unfocussed, unmotivated, cranky, and tired. However, you don’t want to fill your body with empty calories either because your body will still miss out on the nutrients that it needs.

To prevent unhealthy eating habits, you’re going to start by reading labels. You want to make sure that you know what you’re putting in your body. You want foods with calcium, healthy fats, vitamins, and protein. You’re also going to try to cook at home more. Since you’re looking at the labels of the food you buy, when you cook at home you’ll know what nutrients your body is getting. However, when you eat out you don’t know exactly what types of nutrients are in the products that the cooks used or how they cooked your meal.

The biggest problem you have when it comes to a healthy diet is overeating. This coming year you’re going to keep a food journal so you can catch yourself when you’re eating for reasons other than hunger. You want to curb unhealthy habits like emotional eating or eating when you’re bored. You’re going to replace emotional eating with other coping mechanism, so you won’t feel the desire to eat when you’re stress or sad.  However, you’re going to focus on portion control by slowing down when you eat and avoiding eating snacks out of the bag.

Lastly, you’re going to research nutritional facts and healthy recipes. You’re going to make sure that your diet is balanced with protein, vegetables, fruit, and wheat. You’ll cook with spinach, broccoli, and beans.  You’ll make sure to eat protein to help build your strength, healthy carbs to sustain your energy, and fruits and vegetables to provide you with all of the nutrients you need for the day.
